Why Pessimists Don’t Have All the News, All the Time
Yes, Virginia, there are good lawyers.
The preservation of liberty requires a strong judicial system and, yes, lawyers. Democracy can be as primitive as one vote followed by a lifelong sinecure for the authoritarian elect. This holds true in Venezuela, Russia and Pakistan. As a recovering (but still licensed) lawyer, the bravery of Pakistan’s lawyers reminded me of the many honorable members of my profession I’ve had the pleasure to work with over the years.
Yes, Iraq is growing into a real country again.
A nascent democracy is – by definition – flawed and fragile. One test of its growing muscle – as opposed to growing pains – is the reasonable exercise of sovereignty against the parent (think of a teenager growing in responsibility who insists on taking a job). When we give birth to a sovereign client, there comes a point when we no longer get to run it. The real story about the Blackwater scandal in Iraq is that the client democracy really does intend to exercise sovereignty here. All else aside, this is a healthy sign. Would we long tolerate foreign private security agencies freely operating here under immunity?
Yes, a thrice divorced social liberal can attract evangelical support based on the greater good.
Is this a stretch? Pat Robertson endorses Rudy. Robertson says, “It’s just amazing.” I agree.
Yes, we can now laugh at the presidential race.
Mark this link: http://www.aniboom.com/boomzones/raceforthewhitehouse . Cartoon version of the Race. Obama is Luke Skywalker, Mitt Romney is like, R2D2 man, and Hillary is Princess Lea. Uni Shinar, an Israeli TV guy organized the effort, the animated “Race for the White House” is written by Late Show’s Gabe Adleson (who also has written Clinton speeches). And I’ll bet you just thought that Al Gore was funny. Well, that’s still true. Go to http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/algore/Al_Gore_Jokes.htm .
Yes, there are no soap opera reruns for now.
And you thought there was a writer’s strike! It turns out the soap operas really didn’t need writers….
